Jimmy said of his song Friendzone: "I could speak, or write, interminably regarding the topic of the so-called Friendzone. Of course in the modern context it means something entirely different, it is representative of what appears to be mostly young men feeling entitled to the act of sex, and becoming quite enraged when they don't receive it. However, there was a time when the term referred quite simply to unrequited love, which is a complex, deeply painful, and if we're lucky, transformative experience. This song is called the Friendzone because that's what it's about - being genuinely, romantically in love with a friend, a friend who you truly want the best for, but who you also desperately wish to be with, to marry, to spend your life and future together; and you know that in this life at the very least, you're not the one, you'll never be that one, and you try so, so hard to be that great friend, to just be happy for them, to do better and better. That experience is, in a word, agonising. To me that's the Friendzone, anything less than sheer agony at someone you genuinely love spending their life with another, that's not it, and never will be. More or less, that's the story of this song."
lyrics
I hear they're ringing like ghosts
Standing outside like by old lamp post
I left you off with some other man
He can give you all the things that I can't
Stumbling forth under confetti and rice
You stop and you grip my hands like ice
The three of us now embrace
Congratulations show on my face
I couldn't open up inside
There's too much that I've got to hide
Unless I want it to end
Unless I want to be
Unless I want to be
Ending up with you as a friend
I'm smiling too much and you know me too well
You've seen it before 'cause I'm living in hell
You demand that I don't say I'm fine
I love you so I'll tell you why
Quietly claim that I'm lonely again
Make my excuse that it's all for the best
But I see the look in your eye
We all know the reason I lie
I couldn't open up inside
There's too much that I got to hide
Unless I want it to end
Unless I want to be
Unless I want to be
Unless I want to be friends
It's always the same there's more fish in the sea
The right one is there just a'waiting for me
You and I know this, you and I lived this
There's something about me that screams I just can't do this
I couldn't open up inside
There's too much that I got to hide
Unless I want it to end
Unless I want to be
Unless I want to be
Unless I want to
Never open up inside
There's too much that I got to hide
I don't want it to end
But here I gotta be
Here I got to be
Here I got to be
Here I gotta
Here I gotta be friends
